Master Key Systems Edinburgh - One Key, Total Control

NKT Security designs and installs master key suites for offices, schools, residential blocks, and commercial premises across Edinburgh and the Lothians.

A master key system lets you control who accesses what, with one key opening all doors, sub-master keys for departments or floors, and individual keys for each user. It eliminates the need to carry a bunch of keys and gives you complete, auditable control over your premises.

We work with high-security, restricted key profiles that cannot be duplicated without your written authorisation. All systems are installed by our DBS-checked engineers, with a complete key schedule and documentation provided on handover.

Types of master key system

The right hierarchy for your building

Master key systems are built in levels. We'll recommend the right number of levels based on the size of your building and how you need to control access.

Keyed-Alike Systems

The simplest form of key control. Multiple locks are changed so that a single key opens all of them. Ideal for landlords wanting one key per property, or businesses wanting staff to carry a single key for multiple doors.

Master Key Suite

A two-level system with a master key that opens all locks, and change keys that open only one (or a restricted set). Managers carry the master; individual staff carry their own change key. The most common system for offices and commercial premises.

Grand Master System

A three-level hierarchy: a grand master key opens every lock across a site; sub-master keys open a department, floor, or wing; change keys open individual rooms. Designed for multi-floor buildings, schools, hospitals, and campus environments.

Restricted Key Systems

Patented key profiles that can only be duplicated by authorised suppliers. We register your system in your name so only you can order additional keys. Provides long-term key control and protects against unauthorised copies being made.

Master key systems for Edinburgh businesses and organisations

Offices & Commercial Premises

One master key for management, department sub-masters for team leads, and individual keys for each member of staff. No more handing over large bundles of keys when someone starts or leaves.

Residential Blocks & HMOs

Landlords and property managers with multiple properties can use keyed-alike or master suites to reduce the number of keys in circulation. One managing agent key covers all communal areas.

Schools & Education

A grand master system gives the head teacher or facilities manager access to every room, with sub-masters for department heads and change keys for individual classrooms, offices, and stores.

Hotels & Hospitality

Housekeeping, maintenance, and management all need different access levels. A master key suite keeps room access auditable and makes it straightforward to add or remove keys when staff changes occur.

Retail & Multi-unit Sites

Area managers who need access to multiple branches, or retail sites with staff rooms, stockrooms, and storage areas that require separate access levels, benefit from a properly structured key suite.

Industrial & Warehousing

Factories and warehouses with secure zones, plant rooms, and restricted areas can use a master key system to ensure only authorised personnel access sensitive areas — without the complexity of full electronic access control.

How we work

From initial consultation to full installation

We take a careful, methodical approach to master key system design. Getting the hierarchy right at the start saves significant expense and disruption later.

Consultation & Requirements

We discuss your premises, your staff structure, and your access control requirements. How many doors? How many users? Which areas need restricted access? We map out the hierarchy on paper before recommending a system.

System Specification & Quote

We produce a full system specification: the key hierarchy, cylinder types, number of keys at each level, and the key schedule. You'll receive an itemised written quote.

Supply & Installation

We supply all cylinders and keys, and our engineers install them across your premises at a time that suits you. We work to minimise disruption, especially in occupied commercial or residential buildings.

Key Schedule & Handover

We provide a full key schedule (a record of every key issued, to whom, and what it opens) along with a registration certificate for restricted key systems. Additional keys can only be ordered through us, with your authorisation.
