How are people getting on with the snow?
I followed Mark Aldridge’s idea (he’s a locksmith down south, and uses a Discovery) and got a 4×4 that I could work from. It’s a bit small, being a little Jimny, but it’s great off-road. However, despite the 4″ of snow on the drive I managed to get up the drive and out in the fully laden van, without so much as a slip from a wheel!
We bought a pair of WeissSock Anti-Skid Traction Devices – a less snappy name would be hard to find, but it’s a German company! This also means that they work! Most call them “Snowsocks”.
Here’s a shot at the top of the lane, just about over the top of the hill. (Yes, it’s a bit more windswept up there, so only an inch of snow) when I got out to check they had self-adjusted to the right position.

These are designed to get you to gritted and cleared road, but you can drive short distances on tarmac, it just wears them out faster. Unlike chains, however, it’s not a lethal hazard to use them on road, nor is it a nightmare to get them on and off (have you ever used snow chains? They are a nightmare!) and they won’t chew holes in either your tyres or your drive.
And if it gets worse we can still get to you for emergencies, with the 4×4!
